Dear Annawan School Community,
On November 5, Americans will head to the polls for a national election. Among the ballot items will be several questions for voters to consider. I want to draw your attention to one important referendum.
Currently, our governing board policy limits the number of board members from any one township to three. This referendum is necessary because, in the April 2023 school board election, there were no candidates for an open seat, which forced the board to appoint someone to fill the vacancy. By state statute, the voters of the district must be given an opportunity to choose how the board is elected. Therefore:
A "yes," vote for the referendum will eliminate the limit on the number of board members from any single township. Conversely, a "no" vote will maintain the existing policy that restricts the number of board members from each of our townships to no more than three from any one particular township.
It's important to note that the referendum may be approved by either: (1) a majority in each congressional township, or (2) two-thirds of all voters participating in the referendum.
If you have any questions about this ballot measure, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office.
Respectfully,
Jamie Bryan
Superintendent of Annawan Schools
